Iris Counselling MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

We live in an increasingly demanding world, surrounded by a myriad of stressors with many of us falling victim to a host of mental issues. And you might be looking for affordable counselling in Singapore for mental health issues. Read further to find out how Iris Counselling can help.

Many of us reach out to coping mechanisms that don’t resolve these issues but suppress them momentarily, only for them to pop-up in the future again. Having a drink (or two) to calm your nerves. Over-dependency on social media. Binge watching serials every night on Netflix to unwind. Sound familiar? Let’s take a look at some very unnerving figures:

Mental disorders on an upward trajectory

According to findings from a Singapore Mental Health Study in 2016, 13.9% of adults suffer from at least one mood, anxiety or alcohol use disorder during their lifetime. The rate of contracting Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) had the highest 12-month prevalence (2.9%) followed by Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) (2.3%). Compared to a previous study in 2010, both the lifetime and 12-month prevalence of these issues had significantly increased. This could be due to heightened awareness of mental disorders, greater willingness to seek treatment and an increasingly stressful environment.

Youth among the most stressed

A CNA article in 2020, quoting volunteer organisation Samaritans of Singapore (SOS), highlighted that the number of suicides in the City-state for those aged in their 20s remained the highest in 2019 compared to those in other age groups. Among young people (from 18 to 34 years), about 20% have experienced a mental disorder in some form.

Delays in treatment a major concern

Although many of us struggle with mental disorders of varying degrees, the Institute of Mental Health found in 2018 that three-quarters of us do not seek professional help due to fears of social stigmas as well as a lack of education to recognise the typical symptoms of such disorders. Many of us actually accept these struggles rather than addressing them.

Failure to seek treatment can impede daily functioning

A World Mental Health Survey Initiative showed that, “even milder disorders, if left untreated, lead to greater severity, additional psychiatric comorbidity, and negative social and occupational functioning.” Such issues often snowball into something larger down the road.
